Holomisa The Thabo Mbeki Foundation has welcomed the recall of President Jacob Zuma by the ANC.

The Foundation says it has been obvious for many years that the interests of the country would be best served if Zuma was no longer the president.

It has described the NEC’s decision as long overdue and says it will allow the party to deal with all the negative developments that have accompanied Zuma’s tenure.

The foundation is urging Zuma, as a disciplined and loyal member of the ANC, to tender his resignation.

The foundation’s patron, Thabo Mbeki resigned a decade ago as the country’s president after being recalled by the ANC.

ANC secretary general Ace Magashule says if a new date for the 2018 State of the Nation Address is set, the joint sitting will be addressed by party president Cyril Ramaphosa.

“If SONA has to be there it will be presented by [Cyril] Ramaphosa, there is no doubt about it,” he said.

Magashule earlier confirmed the ANC NEC’s decision to recall President Jacob Zuma after weeks of uncertainty.

The SONA had been scheduled to take place last week Thursday but was postponed due to political developments.

When asked who will take over from Zuma once he’s been removed, Magashule said a resolution was taken at the Polokwane conference that the president of the ANC must also be the head of state.

“The only problem we are facing with is that the ANC conference is not aligned to the elections of the country. The collective of the NEC believed that Cyril Ramaphosa must indeed take over the Presidency, in terms of our constitution,” he said.

Meanwhile, political parties have been reacting to the announcement. UDM leader, Bantu Holomisa says the recall means the ANC’s finally woken up to reality.
