CAPE TOWN – The Muslim Judicial Council has expressed shock and sadness following the murder of a nephew of late Cabinet minister Dullah Omar.
Shaheed Omar was shot and killed in an attempted hijacking near Ottery on Thursday night.
The Muslim Judicial Council’s Riad Fataar says he’s distraught following Shaheed Omar’s murder.
“It is just becoming worse and worse when one sees the escalation of crime in our society.”
It’s believed the 44-year-old was hit in his chest by a bullet.
A manhunt has been launched. Police say that, at this stage, it is unclear how many assailants were involved.
Omar will be laid to rest later on Friday afternoon.
There have been calls on social media for police to deal more effectively with violent crime.
The area where Omar was attacked in notorious for hijackings. On Twitter, someone who knew Omar called on Police Minister Fikile Mbalula to act more decisively.
