KZN authorities are urging people to refrain from sharing and posting pictures of the four-year-old Phoenix girl who was brutally assaulted – allegedly by her mother.
“We accept and understand that everybody is very angry with what happened. We understand and synpathise with that but protecting the victim is the most important thing,” said Phoenix SAPS spokesperson, Louise Naidoo.
She says they are aware that the child’s name and image have been made public but say because of the nature of the case, her identity needs to be protected.
A video of the assault sparked outrage across the province last week.
The attack was allegedly filmed by the mother’s boyfriend.
The Department of Social Development in KZN says the child needs space to recover.
Spokesperson, Ncumisa Ndelu says the girl’s now been placed in a private hospital room – with security.
“I understand that members of the public are angry – as is everyone. But going to the hospital is not helping the child – it’s disruptive to her and it’s scary,” Ndelu said.
Meanwhile, the mother’s partner has had his bail revoked out of fear for his own life. His vehicle was torched last week after the clip went viral online. They face charges of attempted murder and are due back in court next month.
