ReenenA KwaZulu-Natal police officer has begun serving his 15-year prison term after being convicted of corruption.

Simon Mvelase, who was based at Van Reenen, was the investigating officer in a theft case.

According to the Hawks, he demanded R21 000 from the girlfriend of the accused in exchange for not opposing bail.

Meanwhile, in the Western Cape, a police captain and a warrant officer are appearing in court today after they were caught on camera taking a bribe.

The 48-year-old police captain and a 56-year-old warrant officer were caught red-handed at a restaurant in Kuilsriver – during a sting operation.

Western Cape police say the pair had taken a bribe from a member of the public who had had their firearm confiscated.
